Dear EUC Member
Exeter University Club (EUC) Annual Outing at Greys Court
On Tuesday 2 June 2020 – part of the activities from 1st to 3rd June
The 2020 Annual Outing will take place on Tuesday 2nd June at Greys Court, a National Trust property in Oxfordshire, near Henley-on-Thames. Set in the rolling hills of the Chilterns, Greys Court is a picturesque Tudor Manor House, surrounded by layers of history, walled gardens and glorious wooded parklands. There have been buildings on the site since the 11th century, originally inhabited by the Grey family, who gave it their name.
As in previous years I would like you to arrive from 11 am onwards and bring a picnic. In the afternoon you can explore the house and/or gardens.
Ann Paddon and Derek Smith have arranged an evening meal at the nearby Shillingford Bridge
Hotel and the hotel is willing to provide overnight accommodation.
They are also organising activities for Monday 1st June and Wednesday 3rd June. If you want to contact Ann and Derek, their details are later in this notice.
The event takes place before schools break up for their summer holidays. So we can avoid the peak visiting of the house and surrounding area.
We look forward to seeing you at this event. A booking form is included with this notice.
The address of Greys Court is: Greys Court, Rotherfield Greys, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire RG9 4PG. The location is 3 miles west of Henley-on-Thames. More information about the site is in the National Trust Handbook 2020 edition page 124. Email email@example.com or phone 01491 628529.
Drivers: Greys Court is most easily reached with the aid of a sat.nav. instrument using the postal code RG9 4 PG. If not, take the A155 from Reading to Henley-on-Thames. There turn left into Market Street and then the road Gavel Hill. Then it is 2 miles to Greys Court.
Parking: Parking is free. Park in the designated areas.
Public Transport: The nearest train station is at Henley-on-Thames. No buses operate in the vicinity of Greys Court, so you need to take a taxi from the station.
Admission Times: The Garden, tea rooms and shop are open from 10 am to 5 pm. For individual visitors the house is open from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Guided Tours: House tours are available at 11 am and 12 noon. Tickets are available from reception – places are limited. A garden tour can be booked, see later in this notice.
Walks: There are 2 walks around the ground. The easier called Sir Felix gentle walk is 1.5 miles and takes 40 minutes. The longer Estate Walk is 1.75 miles, it’s tougher and takes 1 hour.
We recommend that you arrive between 11 and 11.30 am but earlier if you wish to take part in the house tours.
After you pass the entrance, car drivers should park their car, as sign posted. Then everyone should go to reception which is a distance of 50 metres signposted from the car park. If you are a NT member, they will want to check your membership card. If you are not a NT member, you must mention that you are part of the EUC group and give your name. I will give Greys Court the number of non-NT persons. To get to the entrance of the house is a further 150 metres. Toilets and tea rooms are beyond the house, so allow 5 or more minutes to get there from reception.
We usually start with a picnic in the grounds at 12 noon. The place to picnic is near the parking area. There are tables available. The staff at Greys Court say we can bring picnic chairs, as long as we confine them to the area where there are tables by the car park. They do not allow garden/picnic furniture into the main grounds.
We can book a garden tour in the afternoon, starting at 13.30. It will include a cream tea. We have the tour first and start tea at 14.45. The tour lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The tea room serves morning coffee, afternoon tea, lunches and snacks. There is a lunch package.
This event is insured by the Public Liability Insurance of the National Trust.
Please wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing for this event, which is partly outdoors. Allow for rain. If there is a lot of rain, there is unfortunately no overall weather accommodation. However the tea room is open. Let’s hope for good weather.
If you have mobility problems, allow more time between the buildings. Wheelchair users can access the ground floor of the house, but not the upper floors. They can explore the gardens. Two wheelchairs are available for hire. Blue Badge holders can park just outside the house.
If you want to stay in a nearby hotel for an evening meal and stay a number of nights to take part in the activities on Monday and Wednesday, or some of them, please contact either Ann Paddon or Derek Smith at: firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com
For any questions and problems, I am your main contact – my telephone number and, on the day, my mobile number is on the top page of this notice. I am sure you will have an interesting and enjoyable day and I look forward to hearing from you. Please reply using the booking form before 13 May.
